Oh karma, you bitch. (or: another example of how DC drivers can be real assholes)
I drive my car to the station 2 or 3 times a week since gas started getting pricey. I dropped off my car at the usual place this morning and when I got back this evening at 5:30, to move my car closer to the station before going out for the evening (free movie passes- woo-HOO!), I saw that the driver's side mirror was missing.
Good news- I found most of it on the grass strip next to the curb.
Bad news- The motorist (translation: bastard covered bastard with bastard filling) did not leave a note.
It was at the corner of Ellicott and River, where I've been parking it since, oh, hell was a puppy, with no ill effect.
If you're reading this and you did it- shame on you, you careless ass. My name is Liz and I own that blue Nissan you hit today.
Shame on you for not owning up. Shame on you for arbitrarily deciding that I had $500 to throw away on car parts. I didn't deserve to be treated that way. If you don't have insurance then you should NOT be on the road. And if you do, you should have left your information so that your insurance company could clean up your mess. Plain and simple.
And if you are a parent, then I hope your children weren't in the car to see what you did, because you're a poor example for a child to follow.
My cell was close to dead while all this was going down, so I knocked on the door of the house adjacent to where I'd parked and the woman said that not only was she on her phone (thankyouverymuch) but that (insert accusatory tone here:) "this sort of thing happens alot". I said nothing- I park my car there twice a week and there are other cars there only on occasion, so I have no fucking clue what she was talking about. I excused myself and tried a few more doors- no one was home or they were hiding. My phone worked long enough for me to get through to an agent and have her tell me that obviously I was in an unsafe area and I needed to drive away from it. Pronto. She was right- apparently living in a $1-2 million home doesn't make you a nice person.
So I drove to the grocery store, bought blackberries (99 cents a box!) and some brie, came home, charged the phone so that I could talk, and called the insurance company again. Now I'm waiting for the cops to call me back.
Everything I bought today goes back to the store. And my stimulus check buys me a new mirror, which will probably end up on the ground again. I don't care about the clothes so much, it's the principle of the thing. And it's money I can't afford right now, and it makes my car less safe to drive.
The idea of bike commuting daily is looking pretty attractive, but I'm worried- if someone will hit my parked car and drive away, what's to stop them from hitting ME and driving away?

I finally had her all fixed up and pretty and then this happens. Dammit!

or father?
dude, that sucks. people are such douchebags. i'm sorry someone crunched your car. :(

Typing this was good for me. I was really angry at first, and then less so, and as I typed I started to realize that, while disappointing, it happened and I can fix it, and I'm okay.

And I just had to say this, since you locked comments on the entry, that pic of Sarah Jessica Parker was beautiful! Is that on the set of Sex and the City or just a random pic?
no subject
Yeah, that pic of SJP is from SaTC. Can't recall which season- I want to say 6, because it looks like one of the eps. when she's in Paris.
I iconed it and I'm in the process of putting those up now.

Excellent buy on the berries, BTW...

I am, by no means perfect, but I can say without hesitation that I would have left my number and sucked it up if they'd called. I wish I didn't feel like a naive twat for expecting everyone else to do the same.

I know- I'm going to break out my tart pan (the one that I was so excited about that's been sitting in a cupboard for 3 months) and make a tart on Saturday with my friend Jen :)

Thanks for picking out that little detail. Just thinking about making that tart is like a balm to my sore mood. I'll let you know how it turns out.

But it is NOT going to stop me from getting my mother a great gift for Mother's Day, darnit!

Do you have siblings? Regardless, every mother loves pictures of her kids. I bet your mom would like a nice photo of you in a frame. :)

Either way, it sucks. :P

I'm sorry that you have to use the money in a different way than you planned. That really sucks.

Funny, I find that when I bring something on myself I'm a lot less angry about the expense than a case like this where I have no control over what happened.

Does your city have safe biking areas?
no subject
I know, but it still rankles. :(
Funny you'd ask- for the meme you put up (ages ago- sorry) my first thought was about the trail system we have here along the canal that runs from PA to downtown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesapeake_and_Ohio_Canal). I'm very lucky- I live right on the towpath that leads into the city or the paved trail that goes to the same place. It terminates in Georgetown, though, so the last mile or so I have to get on the city streets. But I am getting the hang of it, and usually folks are very respectful of cyclists, so I think I could be okay, really.

Someone stole my turn lights from the side, while I was at school. What the hell does someone want with those?

That's... absolutely bizarre! What did you end up doing?
no subject
I did nothing, except buying new ones and installing them. I couldn't bother calling police, insurance or whatever because of two lights.
