Oh karma, you bitch. (or: another example of how DC drivers can be real assholes)

I drive my car to the station 2 or 3 times a week since gas started getting pricey. I dropped off my car at the usual place this morning and when I got back this evening at 5:30, to move my car closer to the station before going out for the evening (free movie passes- woo-HOO!), I saw that the driver's side mirror was missing.

Good news- I found most of it on the grass strip next to the curb.

Bad news- The motorist (translation: bastard covered bastard with bastard filling) did not leave a note.

It was at the corner of Ellicott and River, where I've been parking it since, oh, hell was a puppy, with no ill effect.

If you're reading this and you did it- shame on you, you careless ass. My name is Liz and I own that blue Nissan you hit today.

Shame on you for not owning up. Shame on you for arbitrarily deciding that I had $500 to throw away on car parts. I didn't deserve to be treated that way. If you don't have insurance then you should NOT be on the road. And if you do, you should have left your information so that your insurance company could clean up your mess. Plain and simple.

And if you are a parent, then I hope your children weren't in the car to see what you did, because you're a poor example for a child to follow.

My cell was close to dead while all this was going down, so I knocked on the door of the house adjacent to where I'd parked and the woman said that not only was she on her phone (thankyouverymuch) but that (insert accusatory tone here:) "this sort of thing happens alot". I said nothing- I park my car there twice a week and there are other cars there only on occasion, so I have no fucking clue what she was talking about. I excused myself and tried a few more doors- no one was home or they were hiding. My phone worked long enough for me to get through to an agent and have her tell me that obviously I was in an unsafe area and I needed to drive away from it. Pronto. She was right- apparently living in a $1-2 million home doesn't make you a nice person.

So I drove to the grocery store, bought blackberries (99 cents a box!) and some brie, came home, charged the phone so that I could talk, and called the insurance company again. Now I'm waiting for the cops to call me back.

Everything I bought today goes back to the store. And my stimulus check buys me a new mirror, which will probably end up on the ground again. I don't care about the clothes so much, it's the principle of the thing. And it's money I can't afford right now, and it makes my car less safe to drive.

The idea of bike commuting daily is looking pretty attractive, but I'm worried- if someone will hit my parked car and drive away, what's to stop them from hitting ME and driving away?

I'm sorry about your car. :(

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. :(

I finally had her all fixed up and pretty and then this happens. Dammit!

[identity profile] raven-feathers.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
if you are a mother

or father?

dude, that sucks. people are such douchebags. i'm sorry someone crunched your car. :(

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah- I had a ranty bit about ON MOTHER'S DAY I HOPE YOU THINK ABOUT HOW YOUR MOM WOULD FEEL IF THIS HAPPENED TO HER! Took that out, though- you know me with my editing ;)

Typing this was good for me. I was really angry at first, and then less so, and as I typed I started to realize that, while disappointing, it happened and I can fix it, and I'm okay.

[identity profile] mugglesrock18.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Meh that really sucks about your car. :(

And I just had to say this, since you locked comments on the entry, that pic of Sarah Jessica Parker was beautiful! Is that on the set of Sex and the City or just a random pic?

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks :(

Yeah, that pic of SJP is from SaTC. Can't recall which season- I want to say 6, because it looks like one of the eps. when she's in Paris.

I iconed it and I'm in the process of putting those up now.

[identity profile] kimaginethis.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
That really pisses me off. Doesn't anyone have a sense of honor anymore?? No, of course not, because it entails a certain amount of personal responsibility.

Excellent buy on the berries, BTW...

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's what gets me. I know that in some ways I'm hopelessly stodgy and silly and old lady-ish, but I refuse to be the kind of person who would do that to someone else.

I am, by no means perfect, but I can say without hesitation that I would have left my number and sucked it up if they'd called. I wish I didn't feel like a naive twat for expecting everyone else to do the same.

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Excellent buy on the berries, BTW...

I know- I'm going to break out my tart pan (the one that I was so excited about that's been sitting in a cupboard for 3 months) and make a tart on Saturday with my friend Jen :)

[identity profile] kimaginethis.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I have ever made a tart... or a pie. I am not a baker. Mom is, though. She is one of those people who makes up recipes and they are always spectacular.

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
My mother is the same, but she's not a teacher, really. I've learned most of what I know how to do on my own, and most of the time it turns out pretty well. :)

Thanks for picking out that little detail. Just thinking about making that tart is like a balm to my sore mood. I'll let you know how it turns out.

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I figured I could spare a few dollars for that. The creme fraiche in the deli, though, that's for next time. Talk about drool- I have never had a container of that stuff all to myself and it's supposed to be wikkid on berries!

[identity profile] frootloopkicker.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard of creme fraiche before. What is that?

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's devastatingly yummy, among other things. Clicky for the specifics. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cr%C3%A8me_fra%C3%AEche)

[identity profile] mexicantt.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I have long since come to the conclusion that the vast majority of people SUCK. Sorry this happened and that you have to spend that money on a mirror. *hugs*

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I mean really- that wipes out my bootcamp membership, 2 months of cellphone bills, and 2 weeks worth of groceries. I guess I can live without the bootcamp, but I need the phone (I don't have a landline and I live alone- it's nonegotiable) and the groceries. :P

But it is NOT going to stop me from getting my mother a great gift for Mother's Day, darnit!

[identity profile] mexicantt.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I know exactly what you mean. Everything is so expensive without stupid jerks causing unexpected huge expenses.

Do you have siblings? Regardless, every mother loves pictures of her kids. I bet your mom would like a nice photo of you in a frame. :)

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
More accurately (lest you think I'm a ditzy princess who spends cash like wattah) the mirror wipes out my IRA contribution and the monthly bit I put in my savings.

Either way, it sucks. :P

[identity profile] mexicantt.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
No, I don't think you spend like that - you've griped before about monetary things which means you're as human as the rest of us. ;) I also know that sometimes you go out not meaning to buy anything and somehow come home a lot more broke than when you left it. *hugs*

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. :) :huggles:

I like that word. It really does make me smile.

[identity profile] mexicantt.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and when I said "you" I meant the generic "you", not you in particular. I do it all the time. I prefer not to go places sometimes because it seems to happen so often.

[identity profile] frootloopkicker.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
What an asshole! Seriously, what is wrong with people that they won't leave a note or something when they hit a car?

I'm sorry that you have to use the money in a different way than you planned. That really sucks.

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. :(

Funny, I find that when I bring something on myself I'm a lot less angry about the expense than a case like this where I have no control over what happened.

[identity profile] mexicantt.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
We like to think we have control over our own lives and that things can't happen without our permission. At least, I know this applies to me... *hugs*

[identity profile] frootloopkicker.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
That makes complete sense because, if you've done something, at least you feel like you deserved whatever it was and the payout is your punishment, but here you didn't do anything wrong and you still have to pay for someone's jerkiness.

Sometimes it isn't fair. :(

WHOA

SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE BITCH-SLAPPED!

Fuckers. I really hope karma bites them on the fucking ass.

Oh no, it was me! *drives back to Europe rather fast*

Srsly, that sucks. Such people are more than annoying. Meh!

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, it was me! *drives back to Europe rather fast*

You owe me chocolate just for MAKING that joke :(

*lol*

That's awful :(

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Poor Evelyn- I got her wheels aligned and got her new tires and was going to get her washed and vacuum her interior this weekend, and then this happened. :(

[identity profile] tonks-2005.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well you know at least it was only her mirror. It could have been worse I suppose but this is bad enough :( Sorry you have to return the clothes too

[identity profile] guad.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
What bastards! But unfortunately that's the general tendency of our society.

The idea of bike commuting daily is looking pretty attractive, but I'm worried- if someone will hit my parked car and drive away, what's to stop them from hitting ME and driving away? Thats the problem I guess. As a biker you are always on the losing side.
Does your city have safe biking areas?

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
What bastards! But unfortunately that's the general tendency of our society.

I know, but it still rankles. :(

Funny you'd ask- for the meme you put up (ages ago- sorry) my first thought was about the trail system we have here along the canal that runs from PA to downtown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesapeake_and_Ohio_Canal). I'm very lucky- I live right on the towpath that leads into the city or the paved trail that goes to the same place. It terminates in Georgetown, though, so the last mile or so I have to get on the city streets. But I am getting the hang of it, and usually folks are very respectful of cyclists, so I think I could be okay, really.

[identity profile] mad-tenshi.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Did they damage the car too or just hit off the mirror? Can you put the mirror on again?

Someone stole my turn lights from the side, while I was at school. What the hell does someone want with those?

[identity profile] lillbet.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It was just the mirror- ripped clean off! Unfortunately it's an electrical system, so it's not so easy just to put it back on, because some crucial inside bits were broken when the mirror part was hit. The sad little female plug end is poking out of the side of the car. I actually use my mirrors and it's a new shock each time I look over and it's gone. :(

Someone stole my turn lights from the side, while I was at school. What the hell does someone want with those?

That's... absolutely bizarre! What did you end up doing?

[identity profile] mad-tenshi.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That sucks, hope that the new one isn't that expensive.

I did nothing, except buying new ones and installing them. I couldn't bother calling police, insurance or whatever because of two lights.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_puchula_/ 2008-05-09 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That sucks! I really hope the people from the insurance can refund you.
